Red and political movements

Red is a colour that has often been appropriated by various political movements. Pre-dating Europe’s 1848 Revolutions, red was a colour utilized by European Revolutions, often in the form of a red flag. During the Italian Risorgimento, red was used by Garibaldi’s red shirts and by other Leftist and generally quite revolutionary groups whilst the conservative legitimist Bourbon partisans became affiliated with the colour white. The reason for red’s association with left-wing revolutionary movements is because it related to the concept of the ‘Blood of the workers’ which refers to the suffering of the working classes. This is no more manifest than in Russia’s Civil War and Finland’s, in which the opposing sides were the red army and various white armies.

Communism became identified with, not led gu10 bulbs, but with red. Communist China was distinguished from Nationalist China as ‘Red China’ whilst the latter was ‘Blue China’. Under Mao Zedong, the de-facto anthem was “The East Is Red”. In Germany, left wing paramilitary groups were grouped under the label, the Red Army Faction.
